Servant Leadership

In keeping with the school’s mission to equip students to be salt and light for God’s glory, Covenant Day desires to create in students a passion for following Christ’s model of service to others as they give of themselves and their resources. We begin instilling the ethic of service in TK and continue each year with more challenging projects that culminate in high school with projects of the student’s choosing. Our program intentionally follows the biblical model of being Christ’s witnesses to the world beginning in Jerusalem, then to Judea and Samaria, and then to the ends of the earth. Our service curriculum is intentional and is designed to inspire CDS students to continue serving long after they leave Covenant Day

Lower School

Our lower school students focus their service on our campus and reaching out to our local community in the town of Matthews. Projects include on-campus service tasks such as flag and safety patrol, collection of recyclable materials, collecting boxes for Operation Christmas Child, honoring local first responders through involvement in our annual Community Heroes celebration, visiting residents at a nearby assisted living facility, and supporting the Matthews HELP Center.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP IN ACTION:

Each year, our fourth grade students head out into the community to serve at nearly twenty different sites for Goodness Guerillas, one of our annual service events.

Middle School

Our middle school students have the opportunity to reach out to Matthews, Charlotte, and beyond. Our Middle School Outreach Committee sets up various service opportunities around Charlotte for our students and seeks to live out the Lord’s call in Acts 1:8, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." The committee strives to give students opportunities to serve at local ministries and organizations that have an impact both here in the Greater Charlotte Area and around the world.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP IN ACTION:

Twice a year, our middle school students head into the surrounding community for Doulos Day, a day of service. Students serve alongside each other at various local nonprofits and then return to campus to reflect on their experiences.

High School

Our high school students have the opportunity to serve in a variety of capacities. Students in our Beta Club introduce projects to get the entire high school involved in giving back. Our art classes spend time volunteering with Matthews Habitat for Humanity, while gaining valuable hands on experience. Some students spend their lunch break once a week mentoring and tutoring children at local elementary and middle schools. Through our Restoration and Sustainability initiatives, students have used their God-given talents to make a difference in Haiti and on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Students have also had the opportunity to serve at Brookstone Schools, Jackson Park, Alexander Children’s Home, Love INC., and on international mission trips. Our desire is that through service our students are transformed and that they continue to be salt and light for God’s glory long after they leave Covenant Day School.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP IN ACTION:

High school students on our ContainIt team use their different talents to transform used shipping containers into livable space to be used as a refuge for impoverished teens on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
