Varsity Boys Basketball
Team Overview
The 3 C’s—culture, Consistency, and Competitiveness—are the foundation of the boys' basketball program here at Covenant Day School. Our job is to develop and prepare young men for life, and we hope we will also win some basketball games in the process.

Conference
Varsity Boys Basketball competes in the Charlotte Independent School Athletic Association (CISAA), which includes Cannon School, Charlotte Christian, Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin, and Providence Day. At the state level, Varsity Boys Basketball competes in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA). We are a Division 4A school.

Michael Laney | Head Coach
Hometown: Monroe, North Carolina
Education: B.S., Business Administration, Francis Marion University
Basketball Experience: Coach Lanet played Varsity Basketball for North Mecklenburg High School before heading to Hampton University. He played Basketball for one season for the Pirates, before finishing his career at Francies Marion.
Started coaching at CDS: 2022
Favorite CDS sports memory: My first season we beat Charlotte Country Day School in double overtime at home on Craze Night.
Biggest Athletic Accomplishments: As an athlete, winning the 2005 State Championship at North Mecklenburg High School and winning the MEAC Conference Tournament in 2006. As a coach, earning 2023 Regular Season CISAA Conference Co-Champion title.
Hobbies: I enjoy visiting new coffee shops.
Fun Fact: I am a BIG Hallmark movie fan, especially Hallmark Christmas movies.
Justin Crowder | Assistant Coach
Lacey Gathings | Volunteer Assistant Coach
Hometown: Greensboro, North Carolina
Education: A.A., Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute
Basketball Experience: Coach Gathings played for 2 years at the collegiate level and played semiprofessionally as well.
Started coaching at CDS: 2023
Favorite CDS sports memory: I would say the game where we beat Cannon at home last year. Truly a special moment for not only the guys but the entire school. I've played in some big-time games, but that environment and experience felt completely different than anything I had ever been a part of. I think those who participated in that game will always look back on that moment with a smile on their face.
Hobbies: I enjoy spending time with my wife and family. Also, reading the Lord's word and growing more and more intimate with Him on a regular basis. Being around basketball is something that I truly enjoy as well. If I'm not doing either of those, I'm either reading or sleeping.
