Field Hockey - Middle School Girls

Game Recap 10/4/2018 vs Providence Day School

Our Lions played an away game against the Chargers and found themselves down 0-4 at the end of the half. During the break, the team went over fundamentals and how to stand up to technically skilled opponents. For most of the second half of play, the Lions held PD scoreless by keeping the ball outside and preventing opportunities in the middle for them to score. With 30 seconds remaining, we took the ball outside and brought it back in but lost it to one of the Chargers who managed to knock it into the goal to give PDS their final point. Coach DeCandia was pleased by the girls' heart and determination, especially in the second half. Next on the schedule, the team will play an away game at Charlotte Latin on 10/9, starting at 5:30.

Game Recap 10/1/2018 vs JM Robinson

The team got off to a shaky start in their game against JM Robinson and played their way to a scoreless tie in the first half. After making some adjustments and position changes, the Lions responded well and nabbed three goals in the second half of play. The team showed great resilience and hustle to bring home the win. The Lions will be in action again on Thursday as they travel to Providence Day School for a 4:15 matchup.

Game Recap 9/28/2018 vs Alexander Graham MS

Our MS Lions played their hearts out against a very good team from Alexander Graham. It was a tough loss for our girls as the 0-2 score was not indicative of the hard work and determination displayed on the field. Next up is a 6:00 game on Monday at the Matthews Sportsplex against the team from JM Robinson.

Game Recap 9/25/2018 vs Holy Trinity

The Bulldogs of Holy Trinity came out strong and scored a quick first goal to open up the game on 9/25. Our Lions proved to be resilient and came back strong with some scoring of their own. Anne Millen held her ground as the goalkeeper, supported by the defensive efforts of Mary Frances Neil and Taylor Wielechowski who turned away scoring opportunities by Holy Trinity late in the game. Coach DeCandia was impressed by the overall stamina and hustle displayed by our Lions in this game and their results reflected that in the 5-2 win over the Bulldogs.

Game Recap 9/24/2018 vs South Charlotte MS

The Lions were in fine form in their Monday afternoon game against the team from South Charlotte Middle as they scored 4 goals in the first half of play. Lauren Chapman also put forth an excellent defensive effort to help keep the opponent at bay. In the second half, our girls worked on passing and give-and-go plays to intentionally avoid scoring. This strategy allowed the Lions to work on their communication and gave game-time opportunities to the newer players on the roster. The team will play an away game tomorrow against Holy Trinity at the Matthews Sportsplex, starting at 5:00.

Game Recap 9/21/2018 vs Charlotte Latin

It was another great game day for the Lions as they edged out Charlotte Latin 2-1. The offensive efforts were led by Josie Mae Gruendel and Grace Watson who each scored a goal, and Mary Frances Neil who headed up the defensive side. Piper East took charge of the goalkeeper duties and held strong against a very strong team from Latin. The Lions will play a home game on 9/24 against South Charlotte Middle School.

Game Recap 9/20/2018 vs Marvin Ridge MS

Our MS Lions implemented a well-coordinated effort in their game with Marvin Ridge. Ellie Barry got her first start in the goalie position and did an excellent job. Piper East, Emmi Pinch, Alyssa Nichols and Grace Watson knocked in goals for the win, while the team worked on passing lanes and positioning to round out the successful afternoon on the field. Next up is another home game on 9/21 as the Lions host the Hawks of Charlotte Latin at 4:15.

Game Recap 9/7/2018 vs Holy Trinity

The Lions rebounded from their loss earlier in the week and came out strong Friday against Holy Trinity, and brought home a huge 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs. Newcomer, Emmi Pinch, set the tone and scored the team's first goal. Grace Watson had an amazing hat trick, while Taylor Wielechowski and Josie Mae Gruendel each had a goal and one assist. Katie Creel and Mackinley Barto also contributed one assist each to the overall efforts. The girls played with more confidence and fierceness to earn this victory! The team looks forward to their next game on Thursday, 9/20, against Marvin Ridge Middle School.

Game Recap 9/4/2018 vs Providence Day School

The MS Field Hockey Lions opened their season on Tuesday, 9/4 with a home game against Providence Day. The matchup was challenging, but our girls worked hard, showed great work ethic and never gave up despite the score. The team has focused on building a solid defense and the game allowed us to put some of that work into action. Piper East had a strong outing in the cage, as she recorded 26 saves in the keeper position for the Lions.
