Softball - Varsity Girls
Coach Beckham lives in Gastonia, NC where he has been a business owner for more than thrty years. He was a high school athlete, competing in wrestling and boxing. He has been coaching at the middle school and high school levels since 1999, for both girls basketball and softball teams. As the head Varsity Softball coach at Gaston Christian, Beckham led the team to several top-four finishes, including a runner-up title in 2008 and State Championship title in 2010. Beckham served as Covenant Day Varsity Softball assistant in 2018 and moved into the head coach position for the 2017 season.
Mark Jones - Asst. Coach | EMAIL
Coach Jones is a native Charlottean. He attended Charlotte Christian School and played basketball and baseball there, earning recognition as team MVP in baseball, before going to play baseball at Covenant College where he obtained his bachelor's degree. Jones also holds a masters degree in sports administration from Furman University. He has more than thirty years of coaching experience at all levels, for both boys and girls. He was the varsity baseball and softball coach at Shannon Forest, a varsity baseball coach at Charlotte Christian, and a baseball and softball coach at Covenant Day. Coach Jones served as the Athletic Director at Covenant Day School for nineteen years and is happy to be back in the coaching arena, returning to the basketball court in the 2016-17 season, as well as assisting with Varsity Softball in spring of 2017.
Jeff Dennison - Asst. Coach | EMAIL
Coach Dennison is originally from Coraopolis, PA, and was a varsity baseball player during his high school career. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Covenant College, and also holds a masters in biblical/theological studies from Wheaton College. Dennison's coaching experience includes middle school basketball assistant, as well as holding assistant and head coaching positions for both baseball and softball at the middle school and varsity level. Coach Dennison has been coaching at Covenant Day since 2011.
CD Hoskins - Asst. Coach | EMAIL
Coach C.D. Hoskins hails from Barboursville, WV where he was a three-sport athlete, playing baseball, football and basketball throughout his high school career. He attended Marshall University and earned his B.S. degree in speech communications. Hoskins has extensive softball coaching experience including four years with the middle school softball team at Northside Christian as well as six years with AAU softball teams in the Charlotte area. Coach Hoskins joined the softball staff at CDS in spring of 2018.

Game Recap 5/7/2018
On Monday, May 7th, the Softball Lions played an away game at Charlotte Country Day to wrap-up their regular season. The Bucs played strong, as pitcher Alissa Farrar threw a complete game from the mound, striking out 3, and going 1-3 from the plate with a double and 3 RBI's. Our Lions' Megan Skvoretz went 2-for-3 and Katie Culpepper went 1-for-3 with an RBI. In the end, our girls came up short 1-9. The team will now await potential seeding in the NCISAA playoffs.

The Covenant Day Lions traveled to Charlotte Latin on Thursday to face off with the Hawks. Sadie Evans was on the mound for the Lions and pitched a complete game, striking out a whopping 14 batters. Her efforts from the plate were also outstanding as she hit 2-for-4 with a triple, 2 RBI's, and 2 runs. Catcher Katie Culpepper was a perfect 3-for-3, cranking out two doubles and 3 RBI's, while Mia Schaeffer added a triple with 2RBI's, and Elizabeth Ertel added a run to the scoreboard as well, by going 2-for-5 for the Lions. The team will head to Charlotte Country Day on Monday for a 5:00 game.

Our Varsity Lions celebrated Spring Senior Night as they hosted Providence Day on 5/1 for a double-header, comprised of two, 5-inning games. The Lions came out strong against the Chargers in game 1, taking a 4-3 victory. The win created a wonderful atmosphere for the the senior recognition ceremony that followed. Seniors, Katie Culpepper and Miranda Mace were honored in-between games along with their parents, for their contributions to the program over the past four years. Game 2 was more challenging for the Lions as fatigue set in and the game got away from them, ending in a 2-4 loss over five-innings. Next up for the team is an away game at Charlotte Latin on Thursday, 5/3 at 4:30 p.m.

The Lions narrowly defeated Cannon School on Thursday to secure another win in the regular conference season. After losing to the Cougars earlier in the spring, our girls were determined to turn the tables. Pitcher Sadie Evans went 2-for-4, striking out 5 in the victory. Elizabeth Ertel was strong from the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Hollis Bullard led the way on offense, cranking out a double and a run while going 3-for-4, and Miranda Mace followed suit, going 1-for-3, picking up a run and an RBI.

Our Varsity Lions recorded a satisfying win at home by edging out the Knights of Charlotte Christian, 7-6, on Thursday afternoon. The Knights jumped out to a 2-run lead in the first inning and added another to the board in the 3rd. Our Lions battled back to even the score in the bottom of the 3rd inning, only to see Christian score again in the top of the 4th. Not to be outdone, our girls kept swinging and added two more runs in both the 5th and 6th innings to take a 7-4 lead. In the top of the final inning, the Knights scored twice but the Lions closed them out and took the narrow victory over Charlotte Christian. Jordan Daugherty went 2-for-2 with a run, and Megan Skvoretz went 2-for-3 with a run. Madison Stophel came up big by going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's for the Lions. Sadie Evans earned the victory from the mound by striking out 9, while going 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs, batting in one and lacing a triple. The team will be in action again on Monday at 4:30 at Providence Day School.

The Covenant Day Lions hosted Charlotte Latin on Tuesday for a home game at 4:30. The Hawks got on the scoreboard first, with a single run in the 3rd inning. The Lions roared back in the bottom of the 4th, and drove in seven runs for the inning. Our girls played excellent ball, and held their opponent scoreless for the remainder of the game. Sadie Evans pitched a complete game in the victory, striking out 13. She also went 2-for-4 from the plate with 2 RBI's and four stolen bases. Elizabeth Ertel went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run. Next up for the Lions is a 4:30 game at Charlotte Christian on Thursday, 4/19.

The Varsity Softball Lions played host to the Cannon School Cougars on Tuesday, April 10th at Warner Park. Our team had difficulty getting their bats around against some tough pitching by Cannon's Gabby Holloway, who threw a no-hitter. Covenant Day pitcher, Sadie Evans, struck out 10 and only allowed one earned run. The team is set to take on Providence Day on Thursday, at PDS.

On Monday, April 9th, the Varsity Lions hosted the team from Christ the King Catholic High School for a 4:15 game. It was a terrific game for the home team with Sadie Evans on the mound for the Lions. Evans struck out 13 batters and threw a one-hit shutout. Megan Skvoretz went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Mia Schaeffer went 2-for-3, contributing 2 runs, an RBI and a stolen base to help the Lions to a 3-0 victory over the Crusaders. The team will play another home game tomorrow, as they host the Cougars of Cannon School at 4:30 at Warner Park.

Our Varsity Softball team hosted the Buccaneers of Charlotte Country Day on Thursday afternoon in a 4:30 conference matchup. The Lions scored in their first at-bat to take the early lead, but their opponent began to apply the heat as their hitting kicked in during the third, netting them three runs for the inning. The Lions added a second run in the fourth, to narrow the gap to one. Unfortunately, the Bucs found a way to score two more runs in the fifth and closed out the game with a 5-2 advantage. Miranda Mace went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and an RBI, while Hollis Bullard went 2-for-4 with a fabulous triple and a run. Pitcher Sadie Evans struck out 10 for the Lions in the loss. The team will be in action again on Monday, 4/9, as they host Christ the King Catholic at 4:15 p.m.

The Varsity Lady Lions traveled to Forsyth Country Day on Thursday, 3/22, for one more game before the spring break. Senior, Sadie Evans earned the victory from the mound and also contributed at the plate by going 2-for-4 with two triples, an RBI and three runs. Jordan Daugherty played a crucial role as well by going 1-for-2 with two walks and 2 RBI's. The Lions kept the Furies on the defensive for much of the game and pulled out a 12-7 victory, gaining them a mention in the Charlotte Observer. Our Varsity team took a loss at home on Friday, as the team played host to Wesleyan Christian Academy. The Trojans' hot bats and aggressive base-running put the Lions on the defensive, threatening to end the game early. Our Lions staged a quick rally and scored two runs to stay in the game at the bottom of the fourth. Sadie Evans led the way by going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's, and Elizabeth Ertel went 2-for-3 and added a run for the home team. Varsity Softball Lions will travel to Forsyth Country Day on 3/22 for their next game.

The Varsity Lions traveled to Jack Hughes Park to play a Thursday afternoon away game against the Cougars of Charlotte Catholic. The Cougars proved to be too much for the Lions as they continued to score, eventually posting a final tally of 3-19. Elizabeth Ertel managed a single and an RBI, while Sadie Evans went 1-for2 with a triple and an RBI. The team will be in action again tomorrow as they host the Trojans of Wesleyan Christian Academy for a 4:30 game at Warner Park.

The Lions played host to the Metrolina Warriors on Friday, 3/9, as the team's season home-opener. Our Varsity girls had a difficult afternoon offensively and defensively as they failed to generate any positive momentum from either side of the ball. Leading hitters for the Lions were Sadie Evans, who went 2-for-3, and Megan Skvoretz and Katie Culpepper who both batted 1-for-2. Next up for the team is an away game at Charlotte Catholic on Thursday, Mar. 15th.

Our Varsity Lions notched a satisfying win over High Point Christian in their first official game of the season. CDS pitcher, Sadie Evans, had an outstanding performance for the Lady Lions. Evans recorded 10 strike outs and hit two triples in the Lions' victory over the Cougars on Friday, 3/2. As the visiting team, Covenant Day scored four times in the first inning and three times in the third, for a 10-7 victory. Madison Stophel drove in three runs with two hits, and Jordan Daugherty had two hits and two RBIs.The team will be in action again next Friday, as they host Metrolina for a 4:30 game at Warner Park.
