David Houseton - Head Coach | EMAIL
Coach Houseton hails from Youngstown, OH but calls the Charlotte area his home. He played two years of varsity baseball at Charlotte Christian before moving on to play at the collegiate level at Motlow State and the University of North Alabama. He earned a BLS from Wingate University and currently works as the Assistant Athletic Director at Covenant Day School. Houseton has seventeen years of coaching experience at the high school level and in travel ball circles. He coached for eight years at Charlotte Christian and then joined the Covenant Day staff as the Varsity Head Baseball Coach in 2009. Houseton has been named Coach of the Year by Matthews Mint Hill Weekly and also coached the gold medal-winning State Games/Region 6 team in 2016.

Coach Oliver is a native of Kingston, NY. He attended South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte where he played four years of baseball and earned both All-Conference and All-State honors. He was a member of the NCHSA State Championship team in 2013, and was named MVP during that time. Oliver played two years of club baseball while attending East Carolina University, and has seven years of coaching experience. In addition to his role with Covenant Day's varsity team, he also coaches the South Charlotte Braves travel baseball team. Coach Oliver has been part of the CDS coaching staff since 2017.

Game Recap 5/8/2018
For the first-round of the NCISAA 3A State play-offs, our Lions traveled to Arden, NC to play the Greenies of Christ School. Christ School got their offense rolling in the first inning, posting one run. Robert Stone was on the mound for the Lions, and went three innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out one. On the offensive side, the Lions struggled to produce hits against the Greenies, who also did not commit a single error in the field. Ryan Shubert and Austin Treadwell each managed one hit, but the Lions did not score over the course of the game. Our defensive efforts could not slow the Christ School onslaught, and the game ended after five innings, 0-10.
Game Recap 5/5/2018
The Varsity Lions played an afternoon away game at Greensboro Day on Saturday, May 5th. The Bengals struck first, scoring a single run in the first inning. The Lions came back quickly, knocking in two runs in the second inning behind a single by Jahmai Sylvestre and a sacrifice fly by Elijah Hunt. Jackson Bertelsen was on the mound for the Lions and surrendered only one run on five hits over six innings while striking out eight batters. The offense cranked into high gear in the fifth inning with singles by Jon Rossi and Philip Abner, and a double by Hunt that propelled the Lions to a 7-1 victory over the Bengals of Greensboro Day. The team will play again on Tuesday in the first round of the NCISAA playoffs, as they travel to Christ School for a 4:00 game.
Game Recap 5/3/2018
It was Senior Night for the Lions on May 3rd, and all of the senior players and their parents were honored following a program-wide picnic that put the crowd in a festive mood. The Lions and the Cannon Cougars kept the score knotted at zero for the first six innings, before Cannon started getting reeling off hits, and scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh. Robert Stone was on the mound for the Lions. He went six and one-third innings, allowing three runs and striking out five. Senior Austin Treadwell came in for relief and finished out the seventh inning. Our Lions just could not generate enough offense to stage a comeback against the Cougars, and the game ended 0-4. The team will play again on Saturday, at 1:45 at Greensboro Day.

Our Varsity Lions traveled to Cannon School on Tuesday for a 4:30 matchup with the Cougars. The game got off to a rough start for the Lions when Cannon posted four runs in the first inning. Our team struggled to contain the Cougars offense and failed to sustain a rally to cut the deficit, resulting in a 1-9 loss. Jon Rossi was on the mound for the Lions for five innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits while striking out two. Hitters for the Lions included Grant Lovelace, Ryan Shubert, Will Boatwright, Jahmai Sylvestre and Rossi, who each recorded one hit. The team looks forward to bouncing back to take on the Cougars again this Thursday, at 7:00 at Warner Park.
The Covenant Day Lions snatched the lead late in the game in an 8-5 victory over Queens Grant on Saturday. Our team got started offensively when Jon Rossi singled in the first inning, driving in one run. In the third inning, the Lions added three more to the scoreboard, as Rossi and Elijah Hunt both drove in runs. The game was tied at five apiece with the Lions batting in the bottom of the fifth when Zach Brighton singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. Austin Treadwell pitched for five innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits, and striking out two. Ryan Shubert threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen, and recorded the last six outs to earn the save. The Lions collected 16 hits on the day, led by Grant Lovelace and Ryan Shubert who both had three hits each. The team will be in action again on Tuesday, when they travel to Cannon School for a 4:30 game.

Our Baseball Lions played an away game at Charlotte Christian on Thursday evening for their second consecutive game vs. the Knights. The team struggled to put runs on the board, but took the lead in the sixth inning when they finally posted one run. Robert Stone started on the mound for the Lions, allowing four hits and zero runs before being relieved by Jackson Bertelsen in the sixth inning. After tying the score in the bottom of the sixth, the Knights took the momentum, giving the Lions more than they could handle, adding seven more runs to the board before the inning concluded. Zach Brighton led the offense for the Lions with two hits in three turns at bat. Next up for the Varsity Lions is a home game on Saturday as they host Queens Grant at 12:00 p.m. at Warner Park.
Game Recap 4/25/2018
The Covenant Day Lions hosted Charlotte Christian on Wednesday afternoon at Warner Park. The Knights took the lead early, scoring three runs in the first inning while our Lions posted just one. Jon Rossi pitched five innings, giving up six runs and striking out three before being relieved by Austin Treadwell out of the bullpen. Rossi, Grant Lovelace and Elijah Hunt each collected one hit for the Lions but were only able to add one run the tally before the Knights closed out the game with a win. The team will face the Knights again tomorrow at 4:30 at Charlotte Christian.
Game Recap 4/20/2018
The Lions welcomed the Buccaneers of Charlotte Country Day to Warner Park on Friday, April 20th. After defeating the Bucs on Tuesday, our guys were looking to make it a clean sweep by adding a second win against the conference opponent. The Lions ramped up the offense in the first inning when Austin Treadwell singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run. The team notched three additional runs in the fourth inning off RBI's by Caleb Embry and Jackson Bertelsen. After scoring three runs in the second inning, Country Day evened the score at 4 in the top of the fifth inning when an error allowed the Bucs to score again. Robert Stone got the start on the mound for the Lions and pitched five innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out two. Bertelsen and Treadwell entered the game from the bullpen, throwing two innings and one inning respectively. Grant Lovelace, Ryan Shubert, Bertelsen, Will Boatwright, Jon Rossi, Treadwell, and Jahmai Sylvestre each collected one hit to lead the team, but it wasn't quite enough to keep the Lions in the winning position. A sacrifice fly by CCDS in the top of the ninth scored the deciding run for the Bucs as they edged out the home team, 4-5.
Game Recap 4/17/2018
The Varsity Baseball Lions traveled to Charlotte Country Day on Tuesday evening for a 7:00 game. The Bucs opened up the scoring in the second inning by posting a single run, before our Lions came back and evened things up in the top of the third behind a double by Caleb Embry. Jon Rossi was on the mound for CDS, striking out two, and allowing just four hits and two runs over six innings. Covenant Day pulled away for good with three runs scored in the 4th inning when Jackson Bertelsen singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run, and a subsequent error scored two more runs for CDS. The Lions' performance in the field was impressive as they remained error-free over the course of the game. The team will turn around and host Charlotte Country Day on Friday, 4/20, starting at 7:00 at Warner Park.

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon for baseball as the Covenant Day Lions played host to the Cougars of High Point Christian. After winning an exciting game on Friday night, the Lions struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Cougars. Will Boatwright pitched three innings for the home team, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out three batters. A single by Jahmai Sylvestre in the fourth inning was one of the few bright spots for the Lions in the lopsided loss to the Cougars. The team looks to bounce back quickly as they travel to Charlotte Country Day on Tuesday for a 7:00 game.
Game Recap 4/13/2018
The Lions hosted Charlotte Latin on Friday evening for the second conference matchup of the week against the Hawks. Covenant Day got off to a quick start, scoring five runs in the first two innings. Unfortunately, the Latin offense went on a hot streak in the third inning, scoring twelve runs off multiple hits and taking advantage of errors committed by the Lions in the field to build a seven-run lead. Our Lions kept themselves in the game by scoring two more runs in the bottom of the third and again in the fourth, before regaining the lead in the bottom of the sixth as they added five runs to the scoreboard. The Hawks knocked in two runs in the top of the seventh inning, threatening to tie the score, but a line drive to the shortstop put an end to the inning and the Lions secured the narrow 15-14 victory. Several CDS players recorded hits, with Grant Lovelace, Ryan Shubert, Caleb Embry, Will Boatwright and Philip Abner collecting two hits apiece. The Varsity Lions will play another home game on Saturday as they host the team from High Point Christian at 1:00 at Warner Park
Game Recap 4/10/2018
Our Varsity Lions played an away game on Tuesday, 4/10 at Charlotte Latin. Covenant Day fired up the offense in the first inning, and scored a run off an error to get the scoring started. Latin evened the score in the bottom of the first inning, but the Lions notched three additional runs in the third inning to take the lead. Jon Rossi was on the mound for the Lions and lasted five innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out eight. Philip Abner and Austin Treadwell came out of the bull pen to close the game out in relief.The Hawks drew level in the bottom of the fourth inning after scoring three, but the Lions came back in the top of the fifth to score two more runs and regain the lead. Ryan Shubert, Eli Hunt, Calb Embry, Austin Treadwell and Jahmai Sylvestre each collected one hit for the Lions in the win over the Hawks. The team will play Latin again on Friday night in a home game starting at 5:00 at Warner Park.
The Covenant Day Lions continued their hot streak of eight straight wins by taking down the Bulldogs of Wesleyan Christian on Saturday to cap off their weekend in the Raleigh area. Philip Abner was on the mound for the Lions and surrendered one run on two hits over six innings while also striking out thirteen batters. After four scoreless innings, CDS broke through with one run at the top of the fifth before piling on four more in the fifth with hits by Eli Hunt, Zach Brighton, and Jackson Bertelsen. Grant Lovelace, Ryan Shubert, Austin Treadwell and Abner also contributed hits for the final 6-1 victory. The Lions will play their first conference game of the season on Tuesday, 3/20, at Providence Day.
Game Recap 3/16/2018
In their first game of a two-game road trip, the Covenant Day Lions grabbed a solid, 11-3 win over Cary Academy. The offense got fired up right away and put one run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning off a single by Eli Hunt. After adding two more runs in the second, the Lions racked up four more in the third, one in the fifth, and three more in the sixth for a decisive victory. Big hitters for the day were Hunt, Ryan Shubert, and Jackson Bertelsen. The Lions will take on Wesleyan Christian Academy tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.

Our Varsity Lions traveled to Hickory Grove Christian on Tuesday, 3/13 for an afternoon game with a 4:00 start. The Lions were quick to get the offense going in the first inning, scoring four runs to establish a good lead. Jackson Bertelsen was on the mound for the Lions, and surrendered only three runs on five hits, while striking out six batters over five innings. Covenant Day's defense was solid in the field and did not commit a single error during the course of the game. Offensively, the Lions continued to add to their score with Ryan Shubert leading the way by going 3-for-4 at bat, and Zach Brighton stealing two bases. Robert Stone threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen to finish the victory for the Varsity Lions. The team will be in action again this weekend as they head to Cary Academy on Friday, and Wake Christian Academy on Saturday.

The Lions were eager to keep their 4-game winning streak alive as they hit the road on Friday, 3/9, for a 4:00 game at Durham Academy. Covenant Day pitcher, Philip Abner, threw six innings for the Lions and surrendered zero hits while racking up 12 strike-outs. Austin Treadwell led the offense for the varsity by going 2-for-3 at the plate, as he drove in runs on a single in the third and a fielder's choice in the fifth inning. The Lions put up four runs in the seventh inning, started by a single from Grant Lovelace and an error on a ball put in play by Jon Rossi. Ryan Shubert also added to the offensive onslaught by recording two hits. Jackson Bertelsen relieved Abner in the final inning to help bring home the win for the Lions.The team will play another away game on Tuesday, 3/13, starting at 4:00 at Hickory Grove.
Game Recap 3/5/2018
The Varsity Lions played host to the Knights of Lake Norman Charter on Monday, 3/5. The Lions got things started offensively in the second inning, when Ryan Shubert singled and drove in a run. Jon Rossi pitched for five innings, striking out nine batters while allowing three runs on six hits. Rossi also led the team offensively by going 2-for-3 from the plate. After adding another run to the scoreboard in both the third and fifth innings, the Lions cranked out six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 9-3 advantage that would hold through the top of the seventh. After another solid home victory, the Varsity Lions will hit the road on Friday for their first away game of the season. The team travels to Durham Academy for a 4:00 game on 3/9.
Game Recap 3/3/2018
In the first game of a two-game day, the Varsity Lions took on the team from Rabun Gap at 1:00 p.m. Conditions were breezy as the last of the storm front left the area, and Covenant Day sailed to an easy 10-1 victory over the Eagles. Philip Abner got the start at the mound and allowed only one hit and one run, while he recorded eight strikeouts in five innings. The Lions amassed seven hits over the course of the game, with Austin Treadwell and Philip Abner each getting two hits, and Grant Lovelace knocking out a double. Jackson Bertelsen and Zach Brighton each added a hit to the total as well. Consistent scoring and good defense earned the Lions their second win of the season.
Covenant Day pitcher, Robert Stone, led the Lions to a win in their third home game of the season as the team played host to Woodberry Forest at 4:00 on Mar. 3rd. The Varsity Lions got off to a fast start, notching six runs in the first inning, Stone gave up zero runs on three hits over five innings, and struck out two batters to give the team a solid shutout. Grant Lovelace led the offense with a double, and seven more Lions produced hits, including Jake Peterson, Ryan Shubert, Elijah Hunt, Jackson Bertelsen, Zach Brighton and Philip Abner. After adding one run in the third inning and five more in the fourth, the Lions were able to end the game by closing out the Tigers in the top of the fifth inning. The team will be in action again on Monday, as they host Lake Norman Charter for a 7:00 game at Warner Park.
Game Recap 2/27/2018:
The Varsity Lions Baseball team hosted Christ the King Catholic HS on Tues. Feb. 27th. The skies over Warner Park were clear, and the temperatures began to dip as the sun went down for the season home opener. After holding the Crusaders scoreless in their first at-bat, our Lions drove home a single run to end the first inning and take an early lead. Lions' pitcher, Jon Rossi, was strong from the mound for five innings, as a defensive battle saw both teams fail to post any runs. Robert Stone came in to pitch for the home team in the sixth and the Lions scored a second run in the bottom of the the inning to increase their lead to 2-0 . The Crusaders began a hot streak in the seventh, scoring four runs before the side was retired. The Lions added two more runs to tie up the score after Christ the King's pitcher hit two batters, sending the game into an eighth inning. Lions Pitcher, Austin Treadwell, came to the mound to relieve Stone for the extra inning and closed out the top of the inning without the Crusaders adding to their scoreline. Zach Brighton cranked out a triple in the bottom of the eighth to put the Lions in scoring position, and Jackson Bertelsen hit a single to drive in the run, securing the victory for Covenant Day. Next up for the Lions is a double-header on Saturday, Mar. 3rd as they take on Rabun Gap at 1:00pm, followed by a 4:00pm matchup with Woodberry Forest.
