David Houseton - Head Coach | EMAIL
Coach Houseton hails from Youngstown, OH but calls the Charlotte area his home. He played two years of varsity baseball at Charlotte Christian before moving on to play at the collegiate level at Motlow State and the University of North Alabama. He earned a BLS from Wingate University and currently works as the Assistant Athletic Director at Covenant Day School. Houseton has seventeen years of coaching experience at the high school level and in travel ball circles. He coached for eight years at Charlotte Christian and then joined the Covenant Day staff as the Varsity Head Baseball Coach in 2009. Houseton has been named Coach of the Year by Matthews Mint Hill Weekly and also coached the gold medal-winning State Games/Region 6 team in 2016.

Coach Oliver is a native of Kingston, NY. He attended South Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte where he played four years of baseball and earned both All-Conference and All-State honors. He was a member of the NCHSA State Championship team in 2013, and was named MVP during that time. Oliver played two years of club baseball while attending East Carolina University, and has seven years of coaching experience. In addition to his role with Covenant Day's varsity team, he also coaches the South Charlotte Braves travel baseball team. Coach Oliver has been part of the CDS coaching staff since 2017.

Game Recap 4/16/2019 vs Olympic HS
Our Lions faced off with the Trojans of Olympic HS on Tuesday afternoon, and were unable to rack up enough runs to catch up after falling behind early. The Trojans scored in each of the first three innings before the Lions began to climb back in slowly by scoring one run in the bottom of the 3rd. Our guys held Olympic scoreless in the next three innings while adding two more runs to bring themselves within one run as they headed into the 7th inning. The Trojans knocked in three runs in the final inning, but our Lions only added two to their total for a final result of 5-7. Cooper Andrews, Jon Rossi, Zach Brighton and Robert Stone each collected one hit to lead the Lions offensively. The team will be in action again tomorrow at 6:30 as they take on E. Meck to wrap up their final game of the tournament.
Game Recap 4/15/2019 vs Butler HS
In their first game of the Jack Sink Invitational, the Lions took on the Bulldogs of Butler High School. Zach Brighton had another big game at the plate, as he drove in four runs on three hits to lead the Lions to a 14-4 Victory. Brighton knocked out a home run in the second inning, and singles in the third and sixth. The team had three other home runs on the day - two by Jon Rossi, and one by Jackson Bertelsen. Overall, the Lions racked up 17 hits, as Robert Stone, Will Barcley, Cooper Andrews, Rossi and Brighton each collected multiple hits. Barcley also stole two bases to bring the team's total to six for the day. Philip Abner earned the win for the Lions as he allowed five hits and four runs over five innings, while striking out five. Robert Stone threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Tomorrow, the team will take on Olympic High School at E. Meck, starting at 4:00 p.m.
Game Recap 4/11 vs Charlotte Latin
Despite seeing their six-run lead whittled down by the end, the Lions still held off Charlotte Latin for a 9-7 victory on Thursday. Zach Brighton went 3-for-3 at the plate, including two home runs, and drove in runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Philip Abner also put one out of the park for the Lions in the fifth. Jon Rossi led the team from the mound. He lasted six innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out six and walking one. Philip Abner and Josiah Hunt entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief. Next week, the Lions will compete in the Jack Sink Tournament.
Game Recap 4/10 vs Charlotte Latin
The Varsity Lions took a solid conference win over Charlotte Latin on Wednesday afternoon. Latin got on the scoreboard first, when they hit a solo homer in the second inning, but our Lions pulled away for good with six runs in the third inning. Cooper Andrews went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the offense for the Lions. Robert Stone earned the victory on the mound. He allowed five hits and one run over six innings while striking out eight. Jackson Bertelsen threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen to finish the game for the Lions. The team will play the Hawks again tomorrow, starting at 4:30, at the Charlotte Latin baseball field.
Game Recap 4/6 vs SouthLake Christian
Saturday's 2:30 game against SouthLake was a heartbreaker for the CDS Lions, as they lost the lead late and took a 6-3 defeat. The game was tied at one apiece with the Eagles batting in the top of the eighth, when they singled on a 1-1 count. Jon Rossi was the starting pitcher for the Lions and went seven innings, while allowing just one run on four hits, and striking out nine. Josiah Hunt took the loss for the Lions after taking over for Rossi and giving up three hits and five runs in the final inning. Philip Abner led Covenant Day's offense with three hits in four at-bats.
Game Recap 4/6 vs Christ the King
In the first game of a Saturday double-header, the Varsity Lions made quick work of knocking out their opponent. Matty Giovanelli had an excellent game from the pitcher's mound, as he threw a no-hitter to lead the Lions to a 12-0 win. He struck out nine batters over five innings to force an early exit by the Crusaders. Philip Abner got the offense underway in the first inning when he singled to drive in two runs. In the fourth inning, the Lions notched six more on the scoreboard,thanks to runs driven in by Cooper Andrews, as well as by Jon Rossi and Brenham Daniell who both cranked out home runs for the home team. Overall the team recorded eight hits in the game, with Zach Brighton, Daneill and Rossi each collecting multiple hits.
Game Recap 3/29/2019 vs Carmel Christian
The Covenant Lions coasted to an easy victory Friday evening against the Carmel Christian Cougars in front of a terrific home crowd at Warner Park. The first score of the game came from a solo homer by Zach Brighton to set the stage for a very fired-up Lions' offense. The team scattered 14 hits over the game, and they posted 8 runs in the fourth inning alone. The big inning resulted from singles by Brenham Daniell and Robert Stone, a home run by Philip Abner, a fielder's choice by Cooper Andrews, an error on a ball put in play by Carson Dunlap, and a double by Will Barcley. Abner was the winning pitcher for the Lions. He surrendered two runs on two hits over five innings while striking out nine. The team will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Providence Day School for a 4:30 game.
Game Recap 3/28/2019 vs Cannon School
For their second game of the week, the Lions traveled to Cannon for a 4:30 matchup. Junior pitcher, Robert Stone, threw a complete game shutout for the Lions to lead the team to a 6-0 win over the Cougars. Stone surrendered zero runs on two hits over seven innings while striking out six. The CDS offense got rolling in the first inning when Philip Abner hit a double, scoring two runs. Abner also cranked out a home run in the fifth inning as the team collected seven hits overall, with Jackson Bertelsen also racking up multiple hits. On the defensive end, the Lions were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Next up for the Lions is a home game Friday night as they play host to Carmel Christian at 6:15 p.m.
Game Recap 3/26/2019 vs Cannon School
Our Varsity Lions started off their CISAA regular-season by hosting the Cannon Cougars for a Tuesday night game. Jon Rossi was on the mound as the winning pitcher, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out seven. Matty Giovanelli came in from the bullpen as relief for the final two-thirds of the seventh inning. The Lions offense was led by Jackson Bertelsen who went 2-for-2 from the plate, along with Jake Peterson who also helped keep the runs coming in the fifth inning. Zach Brighton stole two bases for the Lions to propel the team to a 6-1 victory. The team will travel to Cannon for a 4:30 game on Thursday, March 28th.
Game Recap 3/21/2019 vs Omaha Westside (6:15pm)
After a defeat earlier in the day, the Lions had to regroup and play a second tournament game due to a schedule altered by the weather. The opponent got off to a quick start with one run in the second inning and six runs in the third. The Lions finally got on the board in the fifth inning as they scored three runs thanks to Brenham Daniell and Jackson Bertelsen who both drove in runs. Jon Rossi lasted three innings on the mound, allowing nine runs while striking out three. Our Lions tallied nine hits off the bats of Will Barcley, Cooper Andrews and Bertelsen who recorded multiple hits. Tomorrow the team will meet Holland Hall at 10:30 for the third game of the tournament.
Game Recap 3/21/2019 vs West Boca Raton (3:00pm)
In their first game of the Hall of Fame Classic tournament, our Lions struggled to get their offense rolling which led to a 1-8 loss. Philip Abner was on the mound for CDS and surrendered three runs on two hits over 5 innings, but also struck out eight batters. Jackson Bertelsen, Ben Walton, and Brenham Daniell contributed one hit apiece to lead the Lions offensively. The team will take on Omaha Westside for their next tournament matchup.
Game Recap 3/15/2019 vs Cary Academy
Our Varsity Lions soundly defeated Cary Academy on Friday, with a final score of 2-0. Robert Stone threw seven innings for the Lions and delivered strong pitching, allowing just four hits while striking out 5. Cooper took the lead on offense by going 2-for-3 from the plate. Next up for the Lions is a spring break trip to Florida for the Hall of Fame Classic Tournament.
Game Recap 3/12/2019 vs Wesleyan Christian
The 2018 NCISAA State Champions, Wesleyan Christian, came to Warner Park on Tuesday for a 5:30 game. Our Lions struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Trojans, and gave up nine runs over the course of the game. The CDS offense was led by Cooper Andrews, Brenham Daniell and Zach Brighton, who each collected one hit for the Lions. Philip Abner took the loss from the mound, pitching four and one-third innings, while allowing four runs on two hits and striking out seven. The team will be in action again on Friday night as the Lions host Cary Academy at 6:00 at Warner Park.
Game Recap 3/11/2019 vs Lake Norman Charter
To start off the week, the Varsity Lions hosted the Knights of Lake Norman Charter on Monday. Jon Rossi got the start on the mound for the Lions' first three innings and was backed up by Robert Stone and Josiah Hunt who each threw for two innings apiece. Senior, Jackson Bertelsen went 2 for 2 from the plate to lead CDS in hits, and Cooper Andrews recorded a hit as well. The Lions were unable to recover from the early deficit and took their first loss of the season. The team will take on Wesleyan Christian on Tuesday, starting at 5:30 at Warner Park.
Game Recap 3/4/2019 vs Hickory Grove
Our Varsity Lions hosted non-conference opponent Hickory Grove on Monday, March 4th. The team put on a tremendous defensive effort, and committed zero errors in the field. Philip Abner led the Lions from the mound for four innings and struck out seven batters. Jackson Bertelsen threw three innings of relief to record the final nine outs and earn the save.
The Lions started up their offense in the second inning as Zach Brighton singled on a 3-2 count to score one run. Additional scoring in the third and fourth innings added six more runs to the total led by Cole Walton and Conner Ashley who both drove in runs for the Lions. Will Barcley, Brenham Daniell, Carson Dunlap and Robert Stone also collected one hit apiece as the team easily closed out Hickory Grove.
Game Recap 2/26/2019 vs Greensboro Day
The Covenant Day Lions knocked in eight runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 12-1 victory over Greensboro Day on Tuesday, 2/26. Cooper Andrews, Jon Rossi, Philip Abner, Conner Ashley, and Zach Brighton all contributed in the big inning with RBI's. Abner started the game off with a double in the first inning to start the scoring, and the offense came up big to wrap up the win in just five innings.
Abner was credited with the victory from the mound, as he allowed only one hit and one run over three innings while striking out nine. Robert Stone came in from the bullpen and threw two innings in relief, and recorded the last six outs to earn the save for the Lions. Stone struck out five batters, and the the two pitchers combined struck out a total of 14 of 15 in 5 innings! It was a great home opener for the Lions, and they look forward to hosting Hickory Grove next week.
