Katie Johnson Named Head Coach of CDS Varsity Girls Soccer

Katie Johnson has been named the new Head Coach of the Covenant Day Varsity Girls Soccer program.

Johnson has been on the Lions Girls Soccer staff since 2022 under former Head Coach Graham West. Coach Johnson was named the 2024 NCSCA Region 2 Assistant Coach of the Year.

"We are very excited to name Katie Johnson as the next leader of our girls' soccer program," said CDS Athletic Director Blake Van Der Schaaf. "As a CDS teacher, parent, and coach, Katie understands our values and mission. Combined with her experience playing and coaching, she is the perfect person to shepherd this program to the next level. We look forward to walking alongside Katie as she develops our soccer program and athletes."

"I am honored to step into this role as the head coach for the girls soccer program and thankful for this opportunity at Covenant Day!" said Coach Johnson. "As believers, we have the opportunity to compete and train with excellence while finding our identity in Christ and seeking His glory above our own. I look forward to investing in each of the girls who come through this program, not only as athletes but even more so as young ladies who love Jesus!"

A Fort Collins, Colorado native, Katie has played soccer since she was five. She played collegiately at Westmont College, where she was a vital member of the 1999 NAIA National Championship team. After her senior season, she was named the National Player of the Year. Katie capped off her playing career with four seasons with the Charlotte Lady Eagles.

Coach Johnson brings over ten years of coaching experience, including six seasons at Charlotte Christian and one at Carmel Christian.

Off the field, Katie is deeply involved with the CDS community. She serves as CDS' Lower School Physical Education teacher and is the proud parent of four children – Hailey '24, Lydia '25, Brady '26, and Chayce '28. A soccer family, Coach Johnson, and her family spent two years in Mexico doing sports ministry with a church. She enjoys watching her kids play soccer, working out, playing games, drinking coffee, walking with friends, and anything outdoors and active!
