Avery Houseton - Heart of a Lion

Avery Houseton has the heart of a lion. On the court or the field, Avery’s impact is undeniable. She’s a gifted athlete and a natural-born leader. On the volleyball court, it’s not uncommon to see Avery fearlessly diving on the ground to keep the rally going.

On September 17th, in the 3-set victory over Charlotte Catholic, Avery captured her 1,000 dig for Covenant Day.

Avery is only the second libero in Covenant Day School history to eclipse this mark. With 1,121 digs, she currently sits behind libero Charrisa Coleman ‘16, who notched 1,595 digs during her career.

While Avery may not be on the front line making the kills, her defense has been steadfast and impressive, keeping many points off the board for her opponents. On average, a high school libero has 4 digs a set, 20 a game. Avery has had 8 games this season with over 20 digs, including in the win over Cannon in August, where Avery had 44 digs! Avery’s gritty play has been instrumental to the volleyball team’s success.

Avery has played volleyball for the Lions all four years – starting as a defensive specialist and playing the last 3 seasons as a libero. In addition to her record-setting digs, Avery has also contributed 125 aces and 196 assists in 83 career matches (286 sets).

Avery currently ranks 3rd in NCISAA 4A and 15th in the state of North Carolina for digs. She will look to continue to her record-setting resume this week when the Lions host Cannon and Charlotte Country Day in the Lions’ Den.
