2025 Fall Sports Highlights

2025 Fall Sports Highlights

As fall comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on what has been another incredible season for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans. From the girls varsity tennis team bringing home the Ashe Cup for the first time ever to record-setting volleyball athletes, our teams continued to demonstrate their greatness, not only through wins and records but also through the hustle, grit, and pride they displayed throughout the season.

Varsity Cheerleading
Led by Head Coach Vanessa Laney, varsity cheerleading brought the spirit, energy, and positivity to every event. Lilly Queen was named First Team All-CISAA. Sarah Grattan and Chloe Mederos received Second Team All-Conference honors.

Varsity Cross Country
Varsity cross country had another solid season of growth, with multiple athletes achieving their personal best times. Senior Ethan Welsh ran a career best and earned the second-fastest time in CDS history, with 15:58.7 at the Great American Festival. Junior Sawyer Duncan finished 4th, and Ethan Welsh finished 7th in the CISAA Conference Championship and earned First Team All-Conference Honors.  Juniors Eliza Murray and Joey Johnson both placed 13th in their respective races and earned Second Team All-Conference honors.

Varsity Field Hockey
The varsity field hockey team continued to build on their strong foundation created by Head Coach Rachael Klohr. Earning a 6th overall seed in the NCISAA State Championship Tournament, the highlight of the season was taking Providence Day to overtime in the semifinals. Freshman Taylor Barto and Junior Ann Randolph Bryan were named to the All-Conference First Team and the NCISAA All-State Team. Junior Camden Latta was named to the CISSA All-Conference Second Team.

Varsity Football
While the season’s record didn’t reflect the work the team put in, there is no question that the season was filled with hard work, dedication, and teamwork. The team gained valuable experience that will pay off in the seasons to come. Senior Zabe Wagner (Offensive Line) received All-Conference and All-State honors.

Varsity Girls Golf
With the program still in its early stages, this year’s team achieved measurable growth, including nearly doubling the roster size and multiple girls posting career-best scores throughout the season. Sophomore Alivia Helms continued making a name for herself. She was one of 24 golfers to qualify for States, where she placed 6th. Her performance this season earned her both All-Conference and All-State honors.

Varsity Boys Soccer
It was another season of unprecedented success for the varsity boys soccer team. During an 8-game unbeaten streak, your Lions were ranked first in the nation. The team earned the first overall seed in the NCISAA State Championship Tournament and hosted the State Championship game for a second straight year.
Senior Brady Johnson and Sophomore Chayce Johnson made the All-Conference First and NCISAA All-State teams. Junior Noah Haas and Senior Baker Runger joined them on the All-Conference Second Team. Brady Johnson, Chayce Johnson, Noah Haas, and Baker Runge were named to the NCSCA Region 2 All-Region Team. Finishing in the top 11 in voting, Brady and Chayce made the First Team.

Varsity Girls Tennis
The varsity girls tennis team served up another fantastic season. For the first time in school history, the team brought home the Ashe Cup, the trophy distributed to the winner of the annual Covenant Day vs. Charlotte Christian match. The team hosted its first home NCISAA State Championship Tournament match in four years. Senior Holland Gray earned All-Conference Second Team honors for the second season in a row.

Varsity Girls Volleyball
It was a season for the history books for the varsity volleyball team. Senior Avery Houseton captured her 1,000 dig for Covenant Day in the match against Charlotte Catholic this season. Avery is only the second libero in Covenant Day School history to eclipse this mark and finished the season with 1,192 digs. Senior Maggie Shannon notched 1,000 assists in the senior game match and finished the season with 1,029 during her 3 seasons with Varsity. Avery Houseton capped off her senior season by earning All-Conference and All-State honors.
