2025 Spring Sports Highlights

It was another excellent season for CDS athletics. We capped off the year with moments we will never forget - including multiple teams having their best starts in school history, girls soccer beating #1 nationally ranked Providence Day, two athletes being named Conference Player of the Year, and more!

THE 2024-25 SEASON BY THE NUMBERS

47 athletes earned CISAA All-Conference honors
20 athletes earned NCISAA All-State recognition
17 athletes committed to continuing their athletic careers in college

Varsity Baseball
In Coach David Houseton’s 16th season, the team made school history by starting 14-1. The team is led by nine seniors, four of whom have committed to continuing their athletic careers at the next level. After finishing the regular season 18-6, they earned the #2 seed in the NCISAA State Championship. Senior pitchers Grant Gardner and Isaac Snapp were named to the First Team All-Conference team. Senior first baseman Brodie Dixon earned Second Team All-Conference honors. Senior Grant Gardner also captured All-State and the Charlotte Observer All-Observer Second Team honors.

Varsity Boys Golf
In Jason deBuhr’s first season as the Head Coach, four athletes—Gabe deBuhr, Sean Freace, James Fu, and Reed Maier—qualified for the NCISAA State Tournament. Reid Maier earned Second-Team All-Conference honors.

Varsity Girls Soccer
In Head Coach Katie Johnson’s first season, the Varsity Girls Soccer team went 12-5-2. Their successful season was highlighted by a double-overtime victory over the nation’s #1 team, Providence Day. The team earned the 3 seed in the State Championship. Seniors Millie Jones and Shea Stanley earned First Team All-Conference honors. Senior Lydia Johnson and Junior Jane Neil were named to the All-Conference Second Team. The North Carolina Coaches Association also recognized the team’s performance by naming Millie Jones, Shea Stanley, Lydia Johnson, Jane Neil, Barrett Brooks, and Bella Burns to the All-Region team. Millie Jones and Shea Stanley capped off their senior season with All-State honors. Millie Jones also earned All-Observer Second Team honors. 

Varsity Softball
Led by junior Avery Houseton in almost every statistical category, the softball team started the season 14-1-1. After finishing 17-6-1, the team earned the 2 seed and a first-round bye in the NCSIAA Championship. Avery Houseton was voted Conference Player of the Year. Kaitlyn Allen joined her on the All-Conference First Team. RJ Llaneza and Alison Vandiver earned Second Team All-Conference honors. Kaitlyn and Avery were named to the All-State Team, and Avery earned the Charlotte Observer All-Observer First Team honors. 

Varsity Boys Tennis
Senior Hamilton Huitt led the Boys Tennis team with a singles record of 15 -1. In his Varsity debut, 7th grader Carlton Huitt went 12 -2. Hamilton was unanimously voted the conference player of the year, and Carlton earned all-conference honors. Hamilton was also named to the All-State team and the Charlotte Observer All-Observer First Team.

Varsity Track & Field
The Varsity Track Team has etched their names in the record books with 19 record-breaking performances – highlighted by Senior Jacob Burgess breaking a twelve-year triple jump record and Sophomore Caitlin Kasten and Senior Maggie Dirks breaking a 10-year record in the mile.

The boys 4x400m relay team, comprised of Jacob Burgess, Peyton Morrison, Jack Vandenberg, and Ethan Welsh, and Caitlin Kasten, 3200m and 300m hurdles conference champion, were named to the All-Conference First Team. Ethan Welsh (1600m) and Gracie Poston (400m) joined them on the All-Conference Second Team.

At the NCISAA State Championships, the girls 4 x 200m relay, comprised of Blessing Ogbeiwi, Gracie Poston, Lauren Russ, Maya Spriggs, became State Champions. Caitlin Kasten continued her distance dominance and is the 1600m State Champion. Both performances earned All-State honors.
