Middle School

Students hone their skills in reading and writing. They practice reading deeply through synthesis and analysis of fiction and nonfiction texts. All students receive extra time of Applied English to become more familiar with how to write solid thesis statements, which build the foundation for strong essays.

Students review arithmetic and basic number sense, including decimal and fraction operations, which prepare students for units of study in ratios and percentages. Additional units include integers, variables, equations and inequalities, 2 and 3-dimensional geometry, and statistics. Students focus on thinking logically, using various strategies and tools, communicating mathematical concepts effectively, and problem solving.

Students study the Old Testament in this survey class. They build upon their knowledge of events and themes recorded within scripture to deepen their understanding of what the Bible teaches about God, humanity, and self. A Christian worldview for approaching every issue is developed from the study of scripture.

Students study Life Science, which includes cells, heredity, DNA, viruses, bacteria, protists and fungi, animals, systems of the human body, plants, and dissection, allowing them to examine the phenomena of physical and living things as part of God’s plan. Teachers integrate lab experiments and projects designed to improve a student’s ability in critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. 

Students embark on a comprehensive study of the history and geography of the United States, focusing on Jamestown Colony to the Civil War in US History Part 1. They investigate how humanity has responded to God’s call to care for and unfold the earth. Students learn central themes of formation by studying elements that shape cultures and countries.

Students engage in Greek Mythology to begin their study of Latin in Middle School. Through the discipline of language study, students’ perceptions and understandings of other cultures and their own are enriched. Spanish is offered as an elective.

Students acquire specific game skills and strategies and set personal fitness goals emphasizing life sports and healthy living. Students in grades 7-8 may participate on Covenant Day athletic teams.

Students continue the writing process, expanding the framework to apply their skills to persuasive, informative, narrative, and research-based writing styles. Students interact with complex texts and read for meaning from literature crucial to their learning and preparation for high school and college. They continue to develop their grammar skills through exposure to more complex concepts and continual review of basic grammar mechanics. The study of Greek and Latin roots guides students to have a deeper understanding of the vocabulary in literature. All students receive extra time of Applied English to develop their writing responses to texts.

ENGLISH HONORS

Students learn to perform deeper, more complex analyses of literature and written expression within the framework of a biblical worldview. Students build reading comprehension and critical thinking strategies to analyze the elements of literature, make inferences, recognize themes, and compare texts. The course teaches students to write a multi-paragraph argumentative essay with a thesis statement, textual evidence, and commentary. Students will learn to write expository essays and utilize appropriate transitions to create clarity and cohesion of ideas and concepts when writing. The use of standard written and oral English language conventions (punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and usage) is covered at an accelerated pace to strengthen communication skills.

Students learn ratios and proportional relationships, unit conversions, integers throughout all mathematical operations, order of operations and expressions, continued development of equations and inequalities, geometry, statistics, and probability. Students focus on thinking logically, using various strategies and tools, communicating mathematical concepts effectively, and problem solving.

MATH HONORS (Pre-Algebra)

Students are introduced to algebra through solving equations and inequalities, exponent rules, linear relations and functions, radicals, angle relationships, angles and polygons, and unit conversions. This course focuses on thinking logically, using various strategies and tools, communicating mathematical concepts effectively, and problem solving.

Students study the Gospels. The teacher weaves the four books together to show students the life of Christ and his fulfillment of Scripture through His ministry, death, and glorious resurrection. Students learn how to study the Bible and are encouraged to develop the habit of personal devotions.

Students study earth science, consisting of geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy, allowing them to examine the phenomena of physical and living things as part of God’s plan. They integrate lab experiments and projects designed to improve a student’s ability in critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration.

Students study the Reconstruction Era to the present day through a Biblical lens. The teacher uses interactive activities to build the students’ understanding of primary documents written by historical figures.

Students engage in Latin IA to continue their study of Latin in Middle School. Through the discipline of language study, students’ perceptions and understandings of other cultures and their own are enriched. Spanish is offered as an elective.
